Sunday, November 26, 2016 was bittersweet for the members of First Church. While the church welcomed the start of Advent, the most joyous season of the Christian Church, sadly it was time to say goodbye to Pastor Kate.
Pastor of First Church and East Vincent United Church of Christ since February, 2009, Pastor Kate celebrated the times of passage and farewell with these words, “I thank First Church, its members and friends, for the love, kindness, and support shown me these last several years.” As she said goodbye, she reminded the congregation that “God is good all the time.”
Following the service, a reception was held in the social hall. In addition to a light lunch, the reception was highlighted by a delicious cake inscribed “Best Wishes Pastor Kate.”
She was presented with a number of gifts including a journal with which to continue the story of her life after First Church.
Advent, a version of the Latin word meaning “coming,” is the season observed in many western Christian churches as a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. Marked by a spirit of expectation, of preparation, and of longing, Advent begins four Sundays before Christmas and ends Christmas Eve, the start of the new Christian year. Advent is marked by the color purple, a symbol of penitence and fasting, as well as the color of royalty to welcome the advent of the new-born King.
